Healthy and Cancer Free !

Hi Folks,

Been traveling while working recently. Wanted to share some health tips have gleaned while chatting with friends.

First to enjoy a health heart ~

Whether you believe high cholesterol contributes to heart disease or not, it’s best to keep your numbers low. It’s also quite beneficial to keep your fiber consumption high to reduce your risk of heart disease. And while we’re on the subject — controlling your weight is a given for protecting your heart.

Good news is — there is one fruit that can help you do all that and more…

Research has revealed that consuming one to one and half avocados a day significantly reduces total cholesterol (TC), “bad” low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and triglycerides (TG) — without impacting “good” high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) — when they are substituted for sources of saturated fat.

Avocados, high in fat and calories, can help you lose weight, improve your diet, reduce your sugar intake and help your cholesterol.“Fresh avocado, as part of a balanced diet, and as a cholesterol-free substitute for solid fats, can help be part of the solution for maintaining normal cholesterol levels,” says Nikki Ford, PhD, Director of Nutrition, Hass Avocado Board. “Beyond their naturally good fats, avocados are also a delicious way to boost fiber (8 percent of DV) and fruit intakes, both of which are under consumed in American diets.”

Avocados can also help boost satiety so you feel fuller longer and possibly eat less.

Eating a half of an avocado with a meal, according to a study of people trying to bring their weight down, can help you feel like you’ve eaten enough and avoid the temptation to stuff yourself with sweets.

The Loma Linda researchers found that folks who eat half of a fresh avocado with their lunch experience a 40 percent decrease in the desire to keep eating after the meal. And the effect persisted five hours later (to a diminished degree). The people in the study also reported feeling 26 percent more satisfied.

But what’s that you’ve heard about avocados causing weight gain? Hogwash. Results from the National Health and Nutrition examination survey has shown that eating an avocado every day does not make people gain weight and is associated with better diet quality, nutrient intake and lower risk of metabolic syndrome.

Further, to be healthy to a “T” as in healthy T cells here is what is currently suggested ~

At an annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Washington DC ended recently, and a new cancer-killing therapy was a big topic.

Researchers revealed that they had taken human T-cells and engineered them to identify, memorize and attack tumor cells. The therapy didn’t work for everyone and some patients experienced toxic side-reactions and died. However, some of the patients had many other therapies that failed, and some people were in complete remission after 18 months.

It’s great that scientists have used the body’s own natural cancer killing cells in their research. But like many of these therapies, scientists are calling T-cells a “living drug” so they can patent and sell an eventual therapy … which won’t be available to the general public any time soon.

Fortunately, what is available to you are your own T-cells.

They’re not a drug, and they already attack cancer cells. Plus, you can increase their cancer-killing effectiveness starting right now. Here are three natural ways to boost the cancer-killing effectiveness of your T-cells:

1) Start with getting plenty of vitamin D.

The prestigious journal Nature published a study with a stunning discovery: T-cells don’t work very well unless your vitamin D receptors are activated. In other words, T-cells won’t activate without enough vitamin D.

The study also says you can increase your T-cell responsiveness by 750 percent by making sure you have a good amount of vitamin D.

Direct sunshine is best because our bodies make vitamin D from the sun’s rays. If you can’t get some sun every day, it’s best to get at least 3-5,000 IU of D3 daily. You might need as much as 10,000 IU if you’ve been out of the sun for most of this winter already.

2) Add some selenium to your diet, or make sure it’s in your daily multi-nutrient.

Selenium is well-known to be cancer-protective. But studies show it also increases the effectiveness of T-cells, and makes them more powerful.

Fortunately, you don’t need much selenium. You do need more than the RDA, which is only 55 micrograms. It appears that up to but no more than 200 mcg a day is a good target. You should get it from food. A few Brazil nuts will give you all you need. Or you could eat plenty of eggs, fish, and mushrooms.

3) Have you ever heard of Cat’s claw? It’s easier to say than its Latin name, Uncaria Tomentosa.

This plant is native to South America, and its health benefits are so powerful that it’s now being studied to see what it can do against cancer. What they’ve discovered is that cat’s claw cat’s turns on T-cells and unleashes them against many diseases. Like the T-cells in the study, cat’s claw seems to stop cancer from spreading.

You will normally see cat’s claw in supplement form at a 350 mg daily dose, and it’s standardized to contain 8% carboxy alkyl esters, which is the active compound.

Mother nature provides many options to skyrocket your body’s own natural cancer defenses–and more and more people are turning to them. In 2005, 72 million people sought alternative treatments, many like the ones you can read about in Dr. Michael Cutler’s Surviving Cancer manual. Click to learn more.

Rid your body of Unwanted Toxins the Easy Way ~

Hi Folks,

Got a wonderful update for you.

If you’ve been keeping up with the news, then you know how our bodies our exposed to toxins on a daily basis.

This has become a growing concern, and how to keep healthy in an unhealthy environment.

Well, good news !

Was chatting with a nutritionist friend who offered me some advice, and now would like to share it with all of you.

Everyday our bodies are under attack because we now live in an era of relentless toxic exposure from plastics, pesticides, and obesity additives.

These harmful chemicals can be found everywhere. They are in the water we drink, the foods we eat, and the very air we breathe. And don’t forget about all the lotions, creams, shampoos, deodorants, and air fresheners we use.

Even our cookware can be toxic. Byproducts from Teflon pans, plastic particles from spatulas, and cooking sprays loaded with propellants.

Dangerous compounds like insecticides, PCB’s, heavy metals, benzene, dioxin, phthalates, pesticides, DDT metabolites, flame retardants, styrene, xylene and dichlorobenzene…all have been routinely found in the stool, urine and blood of average people all around the globe just like YOU.

Even newborn infants, not yet exposed to the outside world, are in danger.

In 2005, the American Red Cross took samples of fetal cord blood from 10 newborns and found a shocking 287 chemicals inside the samples, which included dioxins, phthalates, pesticides, Teflon byproducts, flame retardants and many others.

And that’s really just the tip of the iceberg. A study published in the journal Neurotoxicology took samples of the first bowel movement of 426 infants.

– 84% contained mercury

– 27% contained lead

– 27% percent had DDT, a pesticide that was banned in the US for the last 25+ years

There’s no escaping this toxic burden.

It’s ALL inside your body right now and it’s harming your cells, causing severe inflammation, clogging up your liver, stopping your body from getting rid of unwanted belly fat – and it’s aging your body at an accelerated rate.

Fortunately, there are few simple “tweaks” you can make to your diet, starting today, that can help your body eliminate this toxic burden and get your fat loss moving again, while helping you look and feel younger.

My friend spent the last several years teaching these simple fat flushing techniques to men and women of all ages. All you have to do is simply add the 4 foods below into your nutrition plan, and you can instantly begin your fight against the chemical burden that’s inside your body at this very moment.

But proceed with caution: What you’re about to discover is not some extreme cleansing plan, or a dangerous detox method that you normally hear about in health and fitness circles. In fact, it’s so stupid simple and easy to use, that your local health professional will probably think I’m nuts. But I am NOT!

These 4 foods will help you purify your body
of chemical build-up, reduce chronic
inflammation, cleanse your liver of fat storing
toxins and flush away your “trapped” fat –
all in 7 days or LESS.

You read it right. Simply add these 4 foods below to your diet, starting today, and it will take you less than 7 short days to dramatically reduce inflammation and cleanse your liver – helping you begin the process of flushing away your “trapped” fat cells.

Food #1: Turmeric (clean your fat burning filter)

Turmeric is now being touted in the innovative medical community as the “fountain of youth” super spice.

Used predominantly in Indian cuisine, the root of this spice is used for dozens of health benefits, including acting as a powerful, all-natural anti-inflammatory agent.

Often considered the forgotten spice, turmeric can assist your liver’s enzymes in flushing out carcinogens from your body.

This is critically important for optimal health and efficient fat loss because your liver acts as a natural detoxifier. It’s your body’s fat burning filter and turmeric will help you keep it healthy.

A poor functioning liver will ZAP you of your energy and make it nearly impossible to shed unwanted body fat because it’s responsible for the elimination of drugs, pesticides, and environmental chemicals from your body.

Turmeric not only helps you maintain a healthy functioning liver, research indicates curcumin, a chemical found in turmeric, may help reduce joint pain caused from inflammation and lower your blood sugar to eliminate cravings…all of which will keep your body in a “fat burning environment”.

As you can clearly see, this spice is definitely one you want to be making good use of. It will help you flush out more “trapped” fat and it just so happens to work perfectly with food #2 below.

Food #2: Lemon Juice (purge toxins from your blood)

Lemon juice

Lemon juice

The all-natural alkalizing effect of fresh squeezed juice, from organic lemons, has a very powerful detoxifying effect that can purge toxins from the blood and help assist in removing harmful compounds from your body.

Almost everybody has been misled to believe lemons are acidic, but inside your body lemons are an incredibly alkaline food that can help balance your body’s pH, which means better health and higher energy levels.

Lemon juice has also been shown to improve your digestive function, acts as a mild diuretic and is loaded with healthy nutrients (citric acid, vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, bioflavonoids, pectin) that helps boost your immune function.

Combine all these benefits together and you have the PERFECT environment for faster fat loss. All you need to do to get all these healthy fat fighting benefits is squeeze a medium sized lemon (use organic to avoid residual pesticides) into a small glass of water every morning on an empty stomach.

But this is really only the beginning. When you combine this little trick with the ones I provide on the next page, you can supercharge every single one of the benefits listed above.

Food #3: Cruciferous Vegetables
(destroy fat storing estrogen)

Healthy greens

Healthy greens

Cruciferous vegetables contain a naturally occurring ingredient called 3,3′-Diindolylmethane or DIM for short. DIM is strongly anti-estrogenic, so it helps block xenoestrogens (sometimes called obsesogens)…otherwise known as BAD estrogen that accumulates inside your body from constant exposure to environmental toxins.

This hormone is the reason why women are storing more and more belly fat in today’s day and age – and it’s also responsible for chronically low testosterone levels in men. This causes all kinds of nasty side effects like facial hair in women and “man boobs” in men. Not to mention it makes it VERY difficult to lose weight.

DIM not only wards of off bad estrogen, it also acts as an immunostimulant, which means it can naturally “boost” your immune system and Wikipedia even touts this ingredient to have various potent anticancer properties. So including these foods in your diet could go a long way.

Obvious choices to add to your daily nutrition plan are broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, and cabbage. Some other, lesser-known, super veggies include swiss chard, arugula, collard greens, bok choy, kale, and watercress.

IMPORTANT TIP: Since DIM is fat soluble, it’s best to consume these veggies with other healthy oils and friendly fats like grass fed butter. This will greatly enhance the absorption of these powerful fat-fighting nutrients.

Food #4: Tart Cherries
(recover FASTER and stop inflammation)

Tart cherries

Tart cherries

Over 111 million prescriptions are issued yearly for anti-inflammatory drugs. These meds have been shown to wreak havoc on your digestive system, while causing damage to your heart, your liver, and your kidneys.

But the anthocyanins and phenols found in tart cherries have been shown to provide STRONGER protection against muscle injury and damage than these dangerous drugs. In other words, this tiny fruit has been proven BETTER than things like Ibuprofen for reducing inflammation and muscle soreness.

In fact, over 74 published studies indicate tart cherries deliver a high level of protection against cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, and can even fight against Alzheimer’s. Many of them also validate tart cherries and tart cherry beverages speed up recovery time from exercise and reduce inflammatory markers significantly.

But there’s MORE…tart cherries also contain a hefty dose of naturally occurring melatonin (improves sleep) and they have one of the highest anti-oxidant scores of all fruits and they score amazingly low on the glycemic index (~20). So they’re one the best fruits to eat for fat loss.

So by eating a hefty dose of tart cherries (or organic, flash pasteurized tart cherry juice) you can help your body recover faster, reduce joint pain through the anti-inflammatory response, sleep better, and fight inflammation to “flush out” more trapped fat from your body.

So here’s to Living a Healthy Boundryless Life !!

Detox will refresh you like a Day at the Beach

Hi Folks,

Today would like to share some facts and myths regarding Detox while hoping it will help you on the road to health.

So often people think we have to do an extreme juice detox if we want  to rid our bodies of unwanted toxicity, and recharge our digestion.
Well, allow me to debunk this myth:
You REALLY do not have to do an extreme cleansing program to recharge, renew, and rev up your metabolism for the summer months!
If you’d like to jump-start your way into the body you want and deserve, here’s a 1-day detox that’s safe and simple. I always suggest trying a cleanse for one day and noticing how your body feels:

Enjoy being In this Fall season ~

Hi Folks,

Hope all of you are doing well as Summer transitions into Fall.

Was chatting with some friends after a refreshing morning of Tai Chi and Qigong.

What we talked about was how people need to enjoy what the season has to offer.

In other words, enjoy the bounty of fruits and vegetables that are in-season.

Even better is as the season changes enjoying a cleanse to celebrate the new season.

As summer changes into Fall the local farmers market in my area reveal their bounty of the autumn harvest. This prelude to the colder months ahead is a great opportunity to consider the way you eat.

Turning your focus to cleansing seasonal foods can increase your energy, improve your digestion, while preparing your body for winter’s approach.

A cleanse can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, and it doesn’t require any fasting. You can just simplify your plate by incorporating more seasonal produce – like these 5 fall delicious ideas:

Apples: This antioxidant-rich fruit helps reduce inflammation and is linked to heart and lung health. Pick up some crisp green apples for a healthy on-the-go snack, or chop up and simmer with cinnamon for a healthy treat.

Brussels sprouts: High in fiber and vitamin C, this cruciferous vegetable can help lower cholesterol levels, and contain phytonutrients associated with cancer prevention. You can roast or sauté sprouts for a delicious side dish.

Onions: This round vegetable provides anti-inflammatory benefits and protects cells from oxidative stress. It can help lower the risk of colorectal, laryngeal, and ovarian cancers. Add raw onion to salads or cook chopped onion in soups, stews, and stir fried dishes.

Sweet potatoes: Despite their sweet flavor, these tubers help balance blood sugar. They are also a good source of beta-carotene and vitamins B6, C, and D. Try them baked or in soups and stews.

Winter Squash: These gourds are rich with fiber, which is good for digestion and heart health.  They also contain cell-protective antioxidants, including beta-carotene and vitamin C. Bake or steam squash and season with digestive spices,  for a healthy main or side dish.

Some easy to find digestive spices (which also help that digestive system) include the following….

Black pepper:

This common spice has a stimulating effect on digestive organs, and can help increase the flow of saliva and gastic juices. Grind freshly cracked pepper on just about anything.

A slightly sweet spice, it helps boost your digestive fire and removes flatulence. Sprinkle with cinnamon over hot breakfast rice or add to cooked beans for an exotic Indian flavor.

This seed contains oils that offer high levels of cell-protecting antioxidants. It also works like an antispasmodic drug, relaxing the contractive digestive muscles that cause discomfort from disorders such as IBS. Use coriander in hearty stews or in spice rubs on roasts.

Here’s a yummy recipe for you to try that is both healthy and cleansing too !

Brussels Sprouts topped with Chestnuts

Brussels sprouts with Chestnuts

Brussels sprouts with Chestnuts

Prep Time: 8 minutes
Cooking Time: 35 minutes
Serves 4

  • 2 cups Brussels sprouts, ends cut off
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ pound shelled chestnuts*
  • 1 cup chicken or vegetable stock
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

1. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.
2. In a medium sized saucepan, boil 2 inches of water.
3. Add Brussels sprouts to boiling water with a pinch of sea salt.
4. Boil for 5 minutes.
5. Drain Brussels sprouts and add to a baking dish with chestnuts and stock.
6. Sprinkle olive oil and salt on top.
7. Bake uncovered for 20 minutes.

*Feel free to substitute a different nut in this recipe. Sliced almonds or chopped walnuts would also be delicious.

Here is some more of my favorite pantry items …

coconut Coconut oil: This tropical oil was once vilified as artery-clogging oil, but recent studies have shown its medium-chain fatty acids are actually both heart healthy AND can aid in weight loss. Use it for sautéing, stir frying, and baking as it can withstand high temperatures.
olives Olive oil: Look for extra virgin olive oil to get the least refined version. Olive oil degrades quickly with heat, so it’s better to use in your salad dressing than for cooking.
ghee Ghee: Also known as clarified butter, ghee is renowned in Ayurveda as oil that is particularly healing and nourishing to the body. It is great to use for cooking on medium to high temperatures.
rice vinegar Rice vinegar: the white variety is less acidic and milder in flavor, perfect for Asian inspired dishes. Use in a stir-fry or for a different flavor in your salad dressing.
tamari Tamari: This Japanese product is the gluten-free version of soy sauce – no wheat, just soy, is used to make it. Use it in place of salt in a dish and to add depth of flavor to your cooking.
cayenne Cayenne pepper: This red hot chili pepper is high in vitamin A and helps fight inflammation, offers natural pain relief, and boosts heart health. Sprinkle on anything if you like a little heat.
cumin Cumin: this nutty, peppery seed is a source of iron, boost immune function, and can help prevent cancer. And, if you ever have really bad digestion (and gas), take a spoonful of cumin seeds, chew well, and swallow. Within minutes, you should have relief. Commonly used in Indian and Mexican foods, it helps relieve flatulence. For nearly instant relief, chew a spoonful of seeds, or brew a tea from seeds and drink after a meal.
tumeric Turmeric: Not just a colorful, flavorful ingredient, turmeric is known as a powerful medicine used in Indian and Chinese healing systems. It is anti-inflammatory, can inhibit cancer cell growth, may prevent colon and prostate cancer, improves liver function, and lowers cholesterol. Commonly used in Indian cooking, I like to put it in just about anything – great with sautéed greens or scrambled eggs. This root has anti-inflammatory properties, and is traditionally used to help heal cuts, bruises and burns. Raw turmeric juice can also be used to treat hyper-acidity and indigestion.

Let Your Metabolism Naturally help You ~

Happy Healthy Metabolisms !!

Happy Healthy Metabolisms !!

Hi Folks,

Just the other day, had to work extra long so did my outdoor exercise in the evening. Have to admit it Was cooler too  😉

Afterward, enjoying some mango with yogurt and blueberry topping got to thinking of a chat my buddies and I had recently.

It was about how it seems to be popular to use artificial stimulants to boost the metabolism for burning fat.

Anyway, my friends and I challenged each other to think of natural alternatives that were safe as well as easy to use.

Here’s our ideas….Please share yours !

Protein sources

Protein sources

Everyone of you know how important protein is. Protein provides the body with the necessary building blocks, used for building muscle tissue. It also plays a role as an antioxidant and boosts your immune system. But the interesting fact is that protein has a powerful thermic effect on the body. It needs a lot of energy to be digested and this makes it a great metabolism booster. Protein intake coupled with moderate fiber intake will help you lose weight in the long run. Good sources of protein include: Meats, fish, eggs, nuts, almonds, beans, along with moderate dairy including the type called whey.

High Fiber Foods

High-fiber foods

High-fiber foods

Fiber is a nutrient that cannot be digested. It only passes trough our body and in its way changes the nature of contents of the gastrointestinal tract, and the way other nutrients and chemicals are absorbed. Fiber is crucial for our health and well-being. Good sources of fiber include non starchy fruits, vegetables and some grains. Without particular order here are a few high fiber foods that have the role of metabolism boosters.

– Leafy vegetables – spinach and kale
– Cauliflower and broccoli
– Peppers
– Berries,blueberries
– Apples
– Oranges
– Grapefruit
– Cabbage
– Oats (plain, not flavored)
– Nuts, Almonds, Pumpkin seeds  etc.

Grapefruit, Oranges, and Kiwi

No, NOT this kind !!

No, NOT this kind !!

Vitamin C

Vitamin C

Research had shown that participants that included ½ a grapefruit to each meal lost weight without changing anything else about their lifestyle or diet. Oranges have a similar effect. Both of these fruits have high content of fiber and vitamin C, which has metabolism boosting properties.

Green Tea

Green Tea

Green Tea

Green tea is rich in catechin polyphenols, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Research have shown that polyphenols have antioxidant like characteristics with potential health benefits. It is this compound that is believed to be the main ingredient that helps boost your metabolism and aid in fat loss. Additionally, green tea contains caffeine – a powerful stimulant that speeds up the heart and boosts metabolism.

Coffee for Health

Coffee for Health

One of the main reasons we drink coffee in the morning is to wake us up. Caffeine found in coffee has drug-like effects on the body – it speeds up the heart, which in turn increases blood flow and energy expenditure. Caffeine can be effectively used to speed up metabolism, but too much of it can cause arrhythmia and anxiety. Remember though….drink it black for the most health benefits. Adding sugar, and other artificial junk will rob you of the natural benefits AND the rich natural flavor too !!

Healthy Peppers

Healthy Peppers

Capsaicin is a phytochemical found in hot peppers like cayenne peppers, chili, and jalapeno. It’s actually the chemical responsible for the hot and burning sensation you feel when you eat the peppers. Besides the numerous health benefits such as: anti inflammatory, pain reducer and “bad” cholesterol reducer, it is also a potent metabolism booster. It  increased the metabolic activity up to 30 minutes after you consume it.

It helps weight loss in two different ways. One way is by controlling and lowering the blood sugar levels. Cinnamon also has a thermic effect on the body. In order digest it, the body creates a powerful chemical reaction that increases the body’s temperature and the metabolism. When the metabolism speeds up, you are burning more calories and lose weight faster.

Saved the best for last  Water

That’s right – plain water. Almost 2/3rds of our body weight is “water weight”. Being adequately hydrated ensures that you have an optimal metabolic rate. Water is one of the most underestimated of metabolism boosters. Drinking water helps you metabolize fat and flush toxins out of your body. The colder the water more energy the body uses to warm it to normal body temperature and digest it.

Here’s to a Boundrylessly Healthy Metabolism !!

Healthy Metabolism is a Happy Lifestyle

Did you Eat your Berries to Gain Muscle ?

My those Blueberries are GOOOOD !

Hey Folks,

Here’s a great idea for getting your nutrition AND gain muscle too !!

Sounds like a Win ~ Win to me everyone !  😉

We all know that we should eat the right kind of foods but what are these foods and how can they help our muscle building endeavors? I am going to explain how blueberries can help you to recover and build muscles after your workout and why they should be included in all healthy meal plans.

Blueberries are packed with antioxidants.

Antioxidants carry a large number of health benefits. After a workout, a period of stress or illness, your body goes through oxidative stress in which electrons are taken from substances during a chemical reaction. After this process has taken place, we are left with a nasty little thing known as a free radical. Free radicals are basically unstable oxygen atoms.

Free radicals don’t want to be unstable and they will try to find another electron in order to balance themselves out. Free radicals won’t even stop at stealing an electron from one of your body’s cells. In essence, free radicals therefore cause your body to rust on the inside.

Having too many of these free radicals in your body has been linked to a number of diseases, even if it’s not the exact or single cause. Even the most simple of “diseases” is caused by free radicals – aging. We age more quickly with an increase in free radicals. Cancer and Alzheimer’s disease are also both linked with these mischievous substances.

There isn’t a lot we can do about preventing free radicals since they are produced with almost every part of being alive. Working out is one of the biggest producers of these substances and so is any form of stress. Smoking, pollution and eating sugary foods are all attributed with free radical producing properties and any activity that increases your oxygen intake is culpable as well.

Free radicals aren’t entirely useless and we actually need them to survive. They attack germs as well and are very useful in producing energy. However, we don’t want too many of them and that’s where anti-oxidants are very handy. Foods such as blueberries that contain a lot of these anti-oxidants are what’s needed to prevent the surplus production of free radicals.

Anti-oxidants, such as blueberries, are really quite simple; they give an electron to the unstable free radical atoms. Even though your body can produce a certain number of anti-oxidants, you still need to get the majority of them in your diet. This means incorporating as many such foods into your day to day meals.

You should eat a range of foods containing anti-oxidants to ensure that we are fueling up on the other minerals contained in these foods. There isn’t a single food that stands well above the others but rather a selection of foods which are necessary in order to reduce your free radical content.

Understanding all of this allows us to fill up on the foods required for our activities. In the case of bodybuilding, you need to prevent free radicals forming when you put your body under stress and increase oxygen intake. You will find it difficult to grow your muscles if your body is attacking itself with electron exchanges. Put back some vitality and fuel up on antioxidants, such as blueberries along with other muscle building foods.

Blueberries are one of my personal favorites, but there are others out there that are also very beneficial….Do you have another favorite ‘Antioxidant’ fruit you like?  Please share your healthy recipes !!

Enjoy that Summer picnic AND be healthier too !!

So Yum AND healthy too !!

So Yum AND healthy too !!

Hey Folks,

Here’s a great tip that will help make your picnics healthier and your blood pressure too !!

Drop your blood pressure down a few notches by enjoying this pink, juicy picnic treat more often: watermelon.

Turns out watermelon is loaded with an amino acid called L-citrulline. And in a small study of prehypertensive people, this compound helped improve circulation and lowered people’s systolic blood pressure by as much as 9 points. Pretty sweet!

Go ahead….Savor those Slices !!
Nine points may sound like a small drop. But it’s enough of a drop to prevent prehypertension from progressing to full-blown hypertension. And a drop in aortic systolic blood pressure is thought to be especially important in mitigating cardiovascular disease risk. In the study, not only did people’s systolic blood pressure drop when they took a watermelon extract of L-citrulline and L-arginine, but also their blood flow arterial function improved compared with the placebo group. The watermelon extract used in the study contained approximately 2.7 grams of L-citrulline, which is the same amount you’d get from about 7 cups of watermelon juice. That’s a lot of juice. But other studies have shown blood pressure benefits with smaller amounts, so don’t feel like you have to eat the whole melon.

Simply…. Amazing Amino Action !!
Just what’s so great about L-citrulline from watermelons? In the body, this compound gets converted into another amino acid that’s key to the formation of nitric oxide (NO) — that stuff that helps open and relax arteries. So whether you slice it, dice it, or juice it, you’ll want some watermelon year-round, not just on your summer menu.

When you’ve had your fill of watermelon wedges, here’s some great melon recipes for you ….

Watermelon Salad… Oh Yeah !!

What makes this recipe so Yum is the contrasting flavors and textures of crisp, sweet watermelon and creamy, tangy goat cheese are magical partners. Top with sliced grilled chicken to make it a meal.

This makes 5 servings of 2 cups each….so Enjoy more !!  😉

  • 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 3 tablespoons orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon red-wine vinegar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Freshly ground pepper, to taste
  • 8 cups watercress, tough stems removed, or mixed salad greens (5 ounces)
  • 4 cups diced seedless watermelon, (about 3 pounds with the rind) (see Tips)
  • 1/4 cup very thinly sliced red onion, (1/4 small)
  • 2 ounces goat cheese, crumbled
  • 1/2 cup chopped hazelnuts, (2 ounces), toasted

Prep Tips…

Whisk oil, orange juice, vinegar, salt and pepper in a large bowl until well combined. Add watercress, watermelon and red onion; toss to coat. Divide among 5 plates. Top with goat cheese and hazelnuts to serve.

Tips & Notes:

  • Tips: Melon selection & storage: Look for symmetrical unblemished melons, without flat sides, that have a creamy yellow spot on the bottom indicating ripeness. At 92% water, this fruit should feel heavy when you heft it. Precut melon flesh should be dense, firm and appear moist. Store in the refrigerator for up to a week or keep in a cool, dark spot. Cover the cut surface of melon with plastic wrap and refrigerate.
  • To toast chopped hazelnuts: Toast in a small dry skillet over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until fragrant and lightly browned, 2 to 4 minutes.

Say ‘B’ please to get Winter cheer instead of the Blues ~

Enjoying Winter Happily Together !

Enjoying Winter Happily Together !

Hi Everyone,

Know sometimes the chilly winter can make it a challenge to have
energy and holiday cheer. Well instead of just grabbing more turkey during this
Thanksgiving. Try this…..AND still enjoy that holiday cheer too !!

Keeping your spirits up through the winter may be as simple as popping a multivitamin. Just be sure yours contains B6 and B12.

Research has shown that these two nutrients in particular may help reduce the risk of blue moods. Who knew that popping a pill could help keep a smile on your face?

Some Kind of Synthesis
In a study tracking the health and lifestyle habits of more than 3,000 older adults for 7 years, researchers found that as people’s intake of B6 and B12 went up, their risk of depression took a more southerly turn. And with every 10-milligram increase in B6 and 10-microgram increase in B12 intake, risk for depression dropped another 2 percent. Researchers suspect that because B6 is involved in the synthesis of neurotransmitters, it assists in production of mood-lifting serotonin. And B12 deficiencies have been linked to depression and increased cognitive decline in other research.

Which food can make you happier: an apple or some chocolate?

If you immediately said “Chocolate!” you’re right, but (there’s always a but) only if you really enjoy it. If a wave of fat-and-calorie guilt washes over you after the last bite, it negates the mood boost that chocolate provides. Sweet solution: Buy chocolate that has at least 70 percent cocoa. It’s high in cholesterol-fighting antioxidants, and the flavor is so intense that a little goes a long way.

Cocoa is derived from the seed of the cocoa tree and is an essential component in real chocolate. It’s rich in flavonoids, antioxidant compounds that boost cardiovascular health by relaxing blood vessels and improving blood flow. Cocoa also has been found to fight LDL — the bad cholesterol that encourages plaque to build up and clog your arteries. So when you need a chocolate fix, nibble on dark chocolate that has a cocoa content of 70 percent or higher. And use it when you’re making chocolate recipes, such as this one.

Holiday Chocolate Apricots

Chocolate Apricot Delight

Chocolate Apricot Delight

1/3 cup sugar
2 strips lemon zest
1 cinnamon stick
1 cup water
24 dried apricots (about ¼ pound)
2 ounces bittersweet (not unsweetened) chocolate, coarsely chopped
1 tablespoon chopped peeled pistachios

1. Line a baking sheet with wax paper and place a wire rack on top.

2. Combine sugar, lemon zest, cinnamon stick, and water in a small saucepan; bring to a boil, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Reduce the heat to medium and simmer for 3 minutes. Add apricots and gently simmer just until tender, 6 to 8 minutes. Transfer the apricots with a slotted spoon to a rack. Let cool completely.

3. Melt chocolate in a small metal bowl set over a pan of barely simmering water. Dip a poached apricot halfway into the chocolate, letting excess drip off. Sprinkle some chopped pistachios over the chocolate half and return the apricot to the rack. Repeat with the remaining apricots. Refrigerate until the chocolate has set, about 20 minutes.

B on the Brain
Although intake from both food and natural supplements was measured, either it seemed produced significant influence over mood in the study.

So enjoy the holidays Boundrylessly !!!
